Celebrate National Card and Letter Writing Month

Celebrate National Card and Letter Writing Month

April 9, 2026

Senior home care helps seniors share meaningful letters and stay connected

It’s not too late to celebrate National Card and Letter Writing Month with your elderly loved one. This annual observance’s goal is to encourage people to continue the classic art of physically writing out cards and letters and sending them to others to create that human touch across the miles. Senior home care providers can help your senior loved one.

With the advent of modern technology, many people have stopped writing down those important, touching messages to each other that don’t disappear when a new phone is purchased. Written correspondence can be preserved for generations, allowing others to enjoy and learn more about those who have come before them.

Your elderly loved one will easily remember when writing letters and cards were commonplace. It was something that everyone could do and would do. From sending hand-written letters to family members across the country to leaving love notes for their spouse, they grew up writing down their thoughts and emotions. But many have stopped this personalized tradition that can not only convey a message, but also light up someone’s day.

Five Easy Ways to Participate This Month

#1 Get out that address book and send off some letters to old friends.

This can be a great way for your loved one to connect with old friends and family members that perhaps they haven’t heard from in years. It might even spark some renewed connections and help your loved one rebuild a community that they may have lost.

#2 Start up a pen pal situation with a grandchild.

Everyone loves getting fun mail, especially children. Their faces light up when something in the mailbox is addressed to them. Ask your elderly loved one to help your kiddos practice the art of handwriting by sending letters back and forth like pen pals used to do.

#3 Write letters to those in the military.

Soldiers stationed overseas still enjoy getting letters from people back home. If your loved one doesn’t know anyone in the military, look for programs that help connect letter writers with military personnel stationed overseas.

#4 Write a love letter.

Sometimes talking about strong feelings can be hard. Ask your loved one if, instead, they’ll consider writing up a love letter to those they care about, telling them why they love them so much.

#5 Write up favorite recipes and share with family members.

Get some classic recipe cards and have your loved one write down those classic family recipes. If they can add an occasional fun note or little drawing as well, these recipe cards will be cherished for generations.

How Senior Home Care Can Help

While being able to have a physical momento of your loved one’s handwriting is a wonderful gift for everyone who receives it, for some elderly individuals, physically writing a letter or writing a message in a card can be difficult or impossible due to physical restrictions such as arthritis or poor eyesight. If that’s true of your elderly loved one, consider having a senior home care provider help them write up and send out some letters and cards.

Your loved one can dictate to their senior home care provider what they want to say while the senior home care provider writes it up in the card. If your loved one just needs help making sure the mailing address is clear to the postal carrier, their senior home care provider can help by addressing, stamping, and delivering the letters to the mailbox.

Don’t let your loved one miss the chance to keep the tradition of letter writing alive this month.
