Seven Tips for Staying Safe this Summer for Seniors
June 9, 2025

The month of June is National Safety Awareness Month and while many people review the important safety tips seniors should take each winter, some much-needed safety tips need to be followed each summer as well in order for your elderly loved one to stay safe and be able to enjoy all the fun that summer offers without fear of putting himself in danger or harming himself.
Seniors Need to Practice Safety All Summer Long
Don’t let worries keep your loved one from getting outside and enjoying the many wonderful aspects of summer, but instead, review important safety steps he should take before heading out for fun.
Protect Skin and Eyes
Each time before heading out to enjoy any outdoor festivities, it’s important that your loved one takes steps to protect their skin and eyes. To prevent sunburn, sunscreen should be applied to all areas of exposed skin and brought along for reapplication if his outdoor plans will last for several hours or if it’s possible he’ll sweat off some sunscreen or rinse some off while enjoying the water.
A wide-brimmed hat can protect his scalp, his neck, his face, and even his eyes from the damage that the sun causes in the warmer months. Sunglasses are another important accessory to help protect his eyes.
Check the Weather Reports
While weather reports may not be 100% accurate, they can help your loved one be better prepared for the day’s weather events. Sunny skies in the morning can easily turn into storms in the afternoon, and vice versa. Knowing the possible weather situations of the day can help your loved one make decisions that will keep him safe if the weather turns.
Review Medication Side Effects
If your loved one takes prescription medication, have them review the side effects to see if any side effects increase in the sun or hot temperatures. Some medications can make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s UV light, reduce the ability to sweat properly, and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Stay Hydrated
A person can become quickly dehydrated during the summer months, and seniors are even more likely to become dehydrated. Your loved one should drink plenty of water before, during, and after their time outside.
Keep Cool
This can be tough, but it’s a good reminder to your loved one that if he starts to feel overheated, he should seek a cooler environment as soon as possible. Heat exhaustion can happen easily, so make plans for cooling opportunities for your loved one throughout the day.
Employ the Buddy System
While warm and sunny days can lure your loved one out for a long walk in a local park, your loved one should keep in mind that having a companion will help keep them safe in case the unexpected happens and they falls ill or accidentally trips and falls. Companion care at home providers can also provide companionship outside of the home to keep your loved one safe as he enjoys the beautiful sunny day. Whether it’s a stroll around the block or heading out to the backyard, a companion care at home provider can be there to assist your loved one over rough terrain, or even remind him to drink his water.
