How Our Bodies Change With Age

October 14, 2013

Healthy-Aging1                 Aging is a fact of life. Some of us do it more gracefully than others, but it happens to everyone. As we age, changes occur in our bodies, our brains, and even in our ways of thinking. Our needs also change, and we may need a little extra help with everyday tasks from at home caregivers or family members. If you’re wondering what to expect from a physical standpoint as you age, keep reading. Changes in Balance and Coordination Bone shrinkage, loss of muscle strength and flexibility, and the development of joint problems such as arthritis can all lead to a decline in balance and coordination. As such, everyday tasks that were once second nature, such as personal hygiene and grooming, can become a challenge. Rather than becoming upset or frustrated, you might consider in-home caregivers to come to your home on occasion and help you accomplish these tasks while maintaining your independence. Changes in Vision After the age of 40, vision begins to deteriorate because the lens of the eye stiffens somewhat. This prevents the rapid refocusing required to shift vision from far distances to near distances, which is why many older adults may need reading glasses but don’t need glasses for objects far away. Other problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts may also develop. Deteriorating vision may make it difficult to drive, prepare meals, or complete tasks that require close-up focus. An at home caregiver can help in this area as well. Changes in Dietary Needs Nutrition becomes more important than ever in senior years because of increased risk for disease and side effects from medications. Unfortunately, many seniors do not get adequate nutrition to sustain optimal health, either because of lack of appetite, failure to remember to eat, or simply difficulty preparing meals. In-home care services often offer help with meal preparation to ensure that you are getting all the nutrition you need to live a healthy life.
