Summer is giving way to Autumn and with the change in weather also comes a whole new set of things to do. So call friends, grab the grandkids, and even invite the home care provider along for these 5 fun, senior friendly fall activities.
1. Apple picking
Who doesn't love apple pie and ice cream? Most communities have an apple tree farm that opens up to the public each Autumn to pick fresh apples. This is a fun activity to do with all generations. However, if the senior has mobility problems, he or she can still take the trolley out to the field, browse the local gift shop, and enjoy a delicious lunch or slice of apple pie.
2. Go for a hot air balloon ride
Unless the senior is terrified of heights or his doctor advises against it, taking a hot air balloon ride is a thrilling way to see the fall foliage. Because this activity doesn't require much walking, it's a perfectly exciting outing for many seniors and one they will never forget.
3. Take a cruise up the coast
Leaf watching is a favorite past time of many seniors. One of the most relaxing ways to see the beautiful displays of orange, red, and yellow leaves this fall is to take a cruise up the coast.
4. Go to a football game
It's football season so grab a jacket and scarf and start cheering for your favorite team. From professional football to the local high school Friday night football games, this is a great way to usher in the new season with enthusiasm. And for seniors, the stadiums usually provide areas for limited mobility and wheelchairs so they won't have to climb the bleachers.
5. Go to a haunted house
Starting in September, haunted houses begin to open for Halloween. To get ready for this holiday, go to a haunted house, if health and mobility permits. This is a great way to laugh and create lasting memories with family and friends. If it isn't possible for the senior to go to a haunted house, create one for them on their property. Get the grandkids and home care provider to help. Grab decorations and scary costumes from the dollar store, play some spooky music, and most of all, have fun!
