Easy Halloween Treats for Seniors
September 19, 2023
As fall quickly approaches, you may be excited for Halloween. But often, this time of year leads to more candy consumption with all of the holidays coming up. If you are caring for your elderly loved one, you may be in search of trying to find somewhat healthy treats for Halloween. Elder care can help ensure your loved one is eating healthy and regularly, but when you are looking for some fun snacks, here are a few things you can try this Halloween.
Sliced Caramel Apples
Everyone loves apples, and elder care may keep them in the house for a senior to snack on. However, caramel apples are also delicious! Unfortunately, they can be a bit hard to eat for a senior. One of the best ways to make it easier for seniors to munch on is by slicing them into thin, round layers and drizzling caramel sauce on top of them. If your senior likes chocolate, you can alternate between dark chocolate and caramel. For low-sugar options, they may be able to find sugar-free caramel sauce or sugar-free caramel candies to melt over the stove. If your senior needs help using the stove when you’re not home, you can ensure elder care is there to watch them. Caramel apples are always a staple in Halloween and fall. Apples are also low in calories and have been associated with various health benefits, including reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and promoting weight management.
Spider Rice Krispies
If your senior loves chocolate and pretzels, try this treat! You can mix up a batch of rice krispies, add in chocolate or food coloring to make the color of a spider, roll it into round little balls, and pop some pretzel sticks in as legs. Rice krispie spiders are a cute and easy snack idea that isn’t too high in calories either, a senior can easily eat one while still focusing on a healthy diet.
Ghost or Mummy Strawberries
Some seniors may not be huge into candy or marshmallows, and that is understandable. If your loved one is looking for something a little more natural, they should opt for strawberry ghosts! Take off the stems of each strawberry and cut them in half. Once they are prepped, you can slide them on skewers and then dip them in white chocolate. You can add little eyes to them with black frosting, or with more melted white chocolate, you can drizzle lines over the strawberries to make them look like mummies! The antioxidants in strawberries are associated with potential benefits for heart health, cognitive function, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Apple Peanut Butter Teeth
Another yummy apple treat for fall is making them into teeth! Slice them as you normally would and in between each slice add in peanut butter and then to make the “teeth” add in small marshmallows. If your senior doesn’t like marshmallows you can up for more nuts to give them a spookier look and a nutty taste! Peanut butter is a good snack because it's a source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber, which can help provide sustained energy. It’s time to make apple teeth!
