What is Alzheimer's Disease?

June 23, 2015

Did you know that approximately one out of every 10 individuals over the age of 65 will be affected by Alzheimer’s disease? This video takes a closer look at how Alzheimer’s disease progresses. Alzheimer’s disease is a slow, progressive disease that begins when two abnormal protein fragments—known as plaques and tangles—accumulate in the brain and destroy healthy brain cells. These fragments later spread to other areas of the brain and destroy the cells responsible for creating new memories, solving problems, and speaking or recognizing words. Learn more about the different stages of Alzheimer’s disease in this full clip.
