Reducing a Senior's Risk of Dementia with Exercise

July 29, 2014

senior-fitness-successDid you know that 34% of the population 50 years & over is sedentary? Inactivity increases with age, however studies show those 65 yrs. and older that engage in regular activity, 15 minutes or more, 3 times a week decrease the risk of Dementia/Alzheimer's and other medical conditions by 32%. Regular physical exercise also helps older adults become stronger and promotes psychological well being. Physical exercise is essential for healthy aging. When implementing a exercise program for older adults focus on the following:
  1. The capabilities of the person
  2. Range of Motion
  3. Endurance
  4. Coordination
  5. Having Fun
Think about what activities the senior person previously enjoyed doing and adapt that activity and use creativity when possible. Some ideas include:
  • "Sit & Be Fit" DVD programs
  • Walking Clubs
  • Weight Training
  • Tai Chi
  • Dancing
Address physical health daily with any other planned activities and focus on the things a senior CAN do not what they can't... ...and Get Moving!
